I was a Cult Member

I belonged to a cult when I was in high school. It was a small group of people. Only a select few were invited to join. As a member you had to pledge undying support to its founder and to protect his reputation at all costs even if that meant dragging your parents into your mission.

In this cult, I learned far more than any subject or teacher in high school could teach me. It’s not that it was the fault of the curriculum or the school system it was simply that I was an unwilling pupil.

The cult gave me a sense of belonging. Within the cult I formed friendships that would survive my adolescence.

We spent many hours talking. We received counseling that we were unaware that we were getting. We were given additional guidance, guidance outside of our parents’ beliefs that honed our critical thinking skills.

Most importantly, we received love and acceptance. We could be our true selves within this brother and sisterhood.

I graduated from high school with a diploma issued from our local school board and with valuable insight, compassion and heightened self-confidence because of the efforts and devotion of our cult leader.

Thank you Doc!
